>> Christopher Payne. This man is an architect and photographer. His series of photographs of abandoned asylums (mental hospitals) are evocative. They are all captivating, though I was particularly touched by the second photograph under “Artifacts” (which is under “Asylums”, which is under “Gallery”).
>> Responding to the Erotic Transference. A whole bunch of psychoanalysts will be attending this symposium in New York City next week. The conference will apparently feature writers from the TV show “In Treatment” (the website says it is an Israeli show, so I’m guessing it’s not the HBO show with Gabriel Byrne, though I have seen neither….) The tagline of the conference: “Must all patients fall in love with their analysts?”
I just signed up to take part I of the psychiatry board exams. The whole thing seems like such a financial scam.

The cremating urns and graveyard were an especially stark reminder that these weren’t places to go for a little while and get better but places to grow old and die.

Actually, “In Treatment” starring Gabriel Byrne is indeed the HBO production of an Israeli show. Sure hope the participating psychotherapists aren’t as bad at giving therapy as the two therapists in this show are! They definitely give the profession a bad name.

Eh, just think of the board fees as your union dues, it’s all that licensing that keeps American doctor wages high. (As far as I can tell doctoring is one of the few parts of our economy where we’re willing to be protectionist and not import foreign workers willing to do it for cheaper.)

Coordination of comments—it’s like you all planned to address each section individually. Very nice.

I’ve been on the other side of it. It is.
